IN a recent incident in Pokhri village in Gagaha Thana in Gorakhpur, uppder caste feudal criminals attacked the Dalit Tola in the village on 13 June, badly injuring half a dozen people including Ramgati.

About 25-30 armed criminals from the Rajput caste led by Surendra Chand, Shailendra Chand, Sheru Chand and Pintu Chand attacked the Dalit Tola. They mortally attacked Ramgati (55) s/o Gabbu, his sons Abhishek and Atul, daughter Ankita, wife Meera, Ramsingar, Santosh, and a pregnant woman. They also destroyed 4 motorcycles and 1 electric auto. They did not even spare cattle and beat up a cow and a pregnant buffalo. The police and administration were informed, but they only tried to ‘manage’ the situation. It was only after people’s pressure that the injured were referred to Gorakhpur Medical College, after which they got medical treatment and an FIR was registered. Till date none of the perpetrators have been arrested, whereas the dominant Thakurs are constantly issuing life threats if the case is not withdrawn.

Rakesh Singh, RYA leader, has said that if the administration does not take this matter seriously and fails to take legal action against the criminals, the situation could blow up and even end in a carnage. The administration should immediately arrest the perpetrators and take legal action, make arrangements for proper medical treatment and security for the victims and ensure that the feudal dominant forces pay compensation for the destruction wreaked on the Dalit Tola.

An RYA team led by RYA Uttar Pradesh State President Rakesh Singh visited Pokhri village. The team comprised of Rakesh Singh, CPIML District Committee member Shyam Charan, Tasamul and Bhola Prasad.

Rakesh Singh said in a statement on 14 June that ever since the savarna feudal Yogi government came to power in Uttar Pradesh, attacks by feudal forces on dalits-poor have been relentlessly consistent. There does not appear to be any such thing as the rule of law in the State. Last year the savarna feudal-criminals perpetrated the Saharanpur massacre. Since then we have seen feudal attacks across the State in various villages including Asthola, Sopara, Raghupur, Lakhun, Jhagaha and Ojholi in Gorakhpur which is Chief Minister’s own constituency. Incidents of massacre, rape, beatings and other crimes are going up rapidly. The Yogi government, instead of curbing such incidents, is actually tacitly protecting the perpetrators, thus encouraging them.
