IIT-BHU Gangrape Incident Once Again Exposes BJP Culture of Patronising Rapists

With the arrest of three people in the case of gangrape of a 20-year-old B.Tech student from IIT-BHU, among which at least two are members of the BJP IT cell in Varanasi, an ecosystem of patronage and impunity by BJP regime stands exposed. On the night of November 1st, a female student was subjected to horrific sexual violence in the IIT BHU campus. On her way from her hostel, she was held hostage by three men on a motorcycle who molested, groped and gang-raped her. Soon after the 1st November incident, BHU students rose up in protest demanding justice for the survivor, but Yogi Adityanath’s UP Police unleashed barbaric violence on the protesting students.

For a government that keeps boasting itself as champion in law and order, it took around 2 months to arrests the perpetrators. At the same, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, MP from UP’s Kaiserganj, accused in sexual assault against female wrestlers continues to roam free and give open threats asserting his “dabdaba” [influence]. Witnessing the Modi government’s apathy, India’s ace wrestlers like Vinesh Phogat and Sakshi Malik were forced to return their medals and awards.

From Kathua to Hathras, Bilkis Bano to Manipur and WFI Case to IIT-BHU, there is clear patten of widespread impunity and patronage to perpetrators of sexual violence and assault by BJP regime. In several cases, BJPs leaders were seen taking out march in support of the perpetrators and ‘Pradhan Sevak’ Modi choose to maintain criminal silence.
