A ‘Save Constitution’ Convention was organized on 12 January 2020 at Haldwani where it was unanimously decided to form a ‘Samvidhan Bachao Manch’ (Save Constitution Forum) against the attack on the Constitution through CAA-NRC-NPR design by the Modi rule. The convention called for a protest dharna on 18 January under the aegis of this Manch.

The Convention was organized in view of the increasing attacks on the Constitution by the Modi government. The Convention opposed the Modi government’s repeated and vicious attacks on the Constitution and decided to conduct a campaign against the CAA-NRC-NPR package under the Samvidhan Bachao Manch.

Speaking at the Convention, CPIML Uttarakhand Secretary Raja Bahuguna said that our Constitution guarantees the rights of the people of India to vote and elect their government and hold the government accountable for representing their wishes. The Constitution does not give the government the right to decide who shall have the right to vote and who shall not. He further said that giving citizenship on the basis of religion is not acceptable but the anti-Constitutional Modi government is not willing to understand this despite countrywide protests; as a result, this government is trying to enforce its will through lies and repression. Considering the dire economic recession the country is currently going through, they should have concentrated on addressing that issue, but instead they are concentrating on bringing a citizenship act based on religion in order to deliberately play the communal card and polarize the country. The attacks unleashed on students at JNU with the blessings of Union Home Minister Amit Shah are a step ahead of even the Emergency. The one-sided brutal repression on Muslims by the Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh is an ominous reminder of Gujarat 2002. The crisis looming over India at present is a frightful crisis which can be combated only through people’s unity. At such a time it is heart-warming to see the Young India of students and youth unite and play the role of an effective Opposition to protect democracy and the Constitution.

The Imams of Badi Masjid and Mohammadi Masjid said that all-round opposition to the communal-fascist Modi government is the need of the hour. Earlier, the Convention began with the reading of the Preamble and oath on the Constitution.

The Convention was presided over by GR Tamta, welcomed by Municipal Councilor Shakeel Ansari, conducted by Kailash Pandey.
