A ‘Save the Constitution’ symposium was organized at Rudrapur under the banner of ‘Samvidhan Bachao Manch’ against CAA-NRC-NPR and the continuing attacks on the Constitution by the Modi government. The symposium began with a collective reading of the Preamble to the Constitution and it was decided that the Samvidhan Bachao Manch would organize meetings at different places across Udham Singh Nagar, carry out a people’s awareness signature campaign against the CAA-NRC-NPR package and hold a people’s ‘Save Constitution-Save Citizenship’ convention at Rudrapur on 14 March 2020.

Addressing the symposium, CPIML Uttarakhand State Secretary Raja Bahuguna said that in view of the intense protests across the country the Modi government should revoke CAA and concentrate on resolving the employment and livelihood issue. He said that the Modi government is responsible for the communal flames that have recently engulfed Delhi. The Prime Minister, Home Minister, and other BJP leaders had made a stream of vituperative hate speeches such as ‘we can identify them by their clothes’, ‘press the EVM button so that the current is felt at Shaheen bagh’, ‘Goli Maro’, ‘Tukde Tukde Gang’ etc. but they became desperate when the entire country came out to protect the Constitution. The Delhi pogrom is a result of this desperation. The BJP is trying desperately to turn the CAA issue into a Hindu-Muslim issue.

Maulana Fawad Hassan Khan said that CAA is not just against Muslims but against the poor and the working class. CPI District Secretary Rajendra Prasad Gupta said that the government which came to power swearing on the Constitution is acting against the Constitution. CPM District Secretary Rajendra Singh said that it is the people who have the right to choose their government, and not vice-versa; our voter ID is our proof of citizenship.

The symposium, conducted by CPIML District Secretary Anand Negi, was also addressed by Comrades Nishan Singh and Bahadur Singh Jangi and attended by leaders, activists, and justice-loving citizens.
